Professor Sir Harry Burns
Professor Sir Harry Burns is Professor of Global Public Health at Strathclyde University, where his work focuses on health inequalities. In 2005 he was named Chief Medical Officer (CMO) and also Head of the Scottish Medical Civil Service, the Scottish Government's principal medical adviser, a role that he held until 2014.
He graduated in Medicine from the University of Glasgow in 1974 and started a career in general surgery. For five years he worked as a consultant surgeon at the Glasgow Royal Infirmary before changing career to become the Medical Director of the same hospital. In 1993 he became Director of Public Health for the Greater Glasgow Health Board and was awarded a visiting professorship in public health medicine from the University of Glasgow.
